Rural to Urban migration remains one of the challenges faced by urban and peri urban communities within the country. In Ghana people from the Savannah Regions migrate to the urban areas in search of greener pastures and the quest to engage themselves in income generating activities leads to so many hazardous occupations to earn a living. These migrants include the head porters (Kayayes) whose occupation mostly exposes them to a lot of danger and hazards to their health. And in most cases, those head porters are adults who have little or no formal education and other vocational and entrepreneurial skills. Same is said about other adults who did not get the privilege to acquire formal education. These categories of people, amongst others are vulnerable and are expensive to themselves and the economy.
This project in its implementation would provide the Kayayes and other adults with basic literacy and entrepreneurial skills in order to equip them with the necessary knowledge to uplift them economically, to be useful to themselves and the society through our mobile school project.
The activities to undertake for these project includes sensitization and awareness creation of the project to target communities and stakeholders through community durbars and engagement sessions. There would also be training, tuition and demonstration to be delivered by demonstrators.
The project would target head porters and adults within the Kumasi Metropolis within selected communities and the project design would render training and demonstration sessions to the target beneficiaries. Models would be developed and participants would be trained on basic entrepreneurial skills, reading, writing, civic rights and responsibilities, ICT and book keeping.
Research has shown that the cost of illiteracy is more expensive than the cost of curing it. We believe that information improves situations, an informed life has a very high plausibility to an improved living. This in the background means that no life should be deprived of the gathering of information and the training of the mind to reason through education. Therefore, this makes education (either formal or informal) fundamentally, a human right, with no respect to the condition and the situation of the individual.
It is obvious that consciousness comes before awareness; therefore, there is the need for education for people to be aware of their right to education and other rights; presupposing that education is important in every human life and situation. The background to this has ignited a passion from EDUfALL International (literary : Education for All) to initiate a project to eradicate illiteracy. Therefore, considering the frustration of illiteracy in the COVID situation and in the era of technology, we at EDUfALL are beginning a MOBILE SCHOOL project to ensure a 360 setup for such disadvantaged individuals. For a period of 12 months, they would be helped in:
For a start, we are targeting 30 mobile classrooms with a maximum of 20 learners each, estimating 600 learners for a period of 12 months
The essence of our program is to teach people who cannot read and write to get the opportunity to learn for free to socially and commercially enhance their three domains Creating new knowledge (Cognitive), Understanding and developing feelings and emotions (Affective), Improving, developing and learning new Skill (Psychomotor) to cope with the changing global trend. This would also help to reduce the effects of illiteracy which include limited opportunities for employment or income generation and higher chances of poor health, turning to crime and dependence on social welfare or charity.” For a problem that can be solved with books and teachers, illiteracy remains remarkably expensive for too many countries.
